- Just before 00:30 Saturday morning Kuhl Hose was
dispatched to assist Belle Valley with the RIT and a
Tender. 683 & 697 responded as the RIT, and 685 & 686
tender's responded. Once on scene the RIT set up at the
A/D corner behind Engine 32.
Belle Valley crews made an
aggressive interior attack but were pushed back by fire
conditions and water issues. The fire was in a limited
section of Millcreek Township that still has no
municipal water source available. After the initial
water supply was established using Tenders from across
the county, a second interior attack was attempted. The
age (built c. 1819,) construction of the structure and
the fire conditions, the crews were ordered to
evacuate. Air Horns sounded the evacuation. Before all
the crews were able to retreat to the exterior, a
Flashover occurred.
The RIT was already in play
when the evacuation was ordered to assist with making
sure all the Firefighters were outside the structure and
accounted for. Deputy Chief 361 had unconfirmed reports
that there were still 2 firefighters on the interior and
not accounted for, and the RIT was deployed. The RIT
entered and made it to the 2nd floor landing. The
firefighters were located on the exterior, they were
able to exit the building on their own. The RIT was
notified, exited the structure and checked in as all
accounted for.
Operations were limited to
Exterior after the Flashover. Several master streams
were operated to contain and extinguish the fire. 2
Firefighters were transported to area hospitals for
evaluation of minor injuries. Kuhl Hose assisted at the
scene until mid Saturday morning while crews worked on
the exterior of the structure. The fire is being
investigated by the Fire Department and the Millcreek
Police Department.
