Just before 1 p.m. Kuhl Hose units were dispatched for a vehicle fire in the Mothers Auto Parts Salvage Yard.  Shortly after dispatch additional information from communications reported a trailer fire as well as several other vehicles burning.  Medic unit 86 reported a large amount of smoke visible when leaving the fire station.  Additional Engine and Tanker support was requested.

Initially there were several concerns due to the uncertainty of items contained in the salvage yard and several large explosions just after arrival of 682 engine.  The fire was attacked with 1 3/4" lines and master stream operations.  Class A foam was used to help extinguish the fire.  Crews worked to bring the fire under control in just under 1 hour and then had several hours of overhaul work to complete.  A tanker shuttle operation was established from the Siegel Marsh dry hydrant along Route 8 about 1/2 mile from the scene.  Four tankers supplied the operation.

It appears that the fire may have started by an unattended brush/debris fire.  A contractor clearing large trees and brush from an area of the salvage yard had been burning a large pile of the debris for several days.  Wind gusts may have contributed to the spread of the fire from the brush/debris pile.

Greene Township Streets department was called for heavy equipment assistance, crews used a backhoe to help pull apart both the salvage yard and large brush pile.

The salvage yard sits along State Game Lands #218 and Siegel Marsh.  Due to the possibility for water run off and contamination of the Game Lands, water wells, and the marsh down stream from the salvage yard, Erie County EMA was notified.  The EMA officials notified the State EMA office who was able to contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Fish Commission, and Erie County Department of Health to evaluate the ecological and contamination risks and damage.

Kuhl Hose was assisted by units from Belle Valley, Wattsburg, Waterford, Perry Hiway, Edinboro fire departments and Millcreek Fire Incident Response Unit.  The Millcreek response unit is comprised of Millcreek Township employees that are all members of the 5 townships fire departments that at the request of any incident commander, are able to respond with personnel for support at any incident in or out of the township.

Crews cleared the scene just after 5 p.m.
